Mindfulness-Based Interventions

Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment and paying attention to one's thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment. This practice is rooted in ancient Buddhist tradition and was adapted to clinical settings by Jon Kabat-Zin. It is way of being that is focused on the present moment and can be taught as a form of therapy for mental health conditions. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are therapeutic techniques that incorporate mindfulness practices and have been shown to be effective in treating a wide range of mental health conditions, particularly anxiety. Mindfulness may be practiced formally through sitting meditation or informally through awareness exercises. MBIs can help individuals with anxiety by teaching them how to recognize and manage their thoughts, emotions and physical sensations in a non-judgmental way, which leads to reducing the symptoms of anxiety and improving overall well-being. It also helps in developing self-compassion and self-awareness, which in turn help in building resilience to cope with future stressors. MBIs can be delivered in an individual or group setting and include practices such as mindfulness meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises.
